How to properly edit a scuba diving photo
Most underwater editing guides tell you which buttons to press. This one starts a step earlier: what it actually means for a diving photo to be well edited, why the same correction works on one photo and destroys the next, and how to know when you are finished.

What editing «correctly» means under water
There are two ways of understanding underwater editing, and it is worth being clear about which one you are doing, because they lead to different results.
The first is restoring: giving the image back the colours that were really there and that the water ate along the way. Water absorbs light selectively, starting with red in the first few metres and continuing with orange and yellow, so what the camera records is an impoverished version of what your eyes interpreted down there. Restoring means putting that lost information back.
The second is interpreting: aiming for an image that works visually even if it is not literal. A blue deeper than the real one, stronger contrast, a backlit silhouette pushed to the limit.
Neither is wrong. The problem appears when you think you are restoring and you are actually interpreting without control, which is where those photos with purple water and pink divers come from. A correct edit is one that knows which of the two it is doing, and does it with judgement.
The reference that never fails: the elements you know are neutral or of a known colour. Sand is beige, not orange. The white skirt of a mask is white. Human skin sits within a fairly narrow range of tones. If those elements look right, the rest of the photo almost certainly does too.
First step: read the photo before touching it
This is the step almost everyone skips and the one that saves the most time. Before moving a single control, answer three questions about the photo:
1. At what depth and in what light was it taken?
You do not need the metadata, you can see it in the image. If the subject has its own saturated colour, there was a strobe or a light. If the whole scene leans blue uniformly, it is ambient light and there is depth. The amount of correction each case needs is nothing alike.
2. How much water is between camera and subject?
This matters more than depth. A subject 30 cm away on a 25-metre dive keeps a good deal of colour; a subject 4 metres away on an 8-metre dive arrives far more washed out. It is the water column the light travels through that eats colour and contrast.
3. What is the important part of the image?
The subject, the ambience or the graphic composition. This decides what you protect when there is a conflict, and there always is: recovering the subject tends to warm the water, and protecting the blue tends to leave the subject flat.
The correction changes with the type of scene
Here is the underlying reason a single preset never works well: there is no such thing as "a diving photo". There are five or six very different situations that call for opposite things.

If you use presets, pick the one that matches the scene instead of always applying the same one. And if the editor has an intensity control, use it: most photos look better with the preset at 60 or 80 % than at 100 %.
The workflow, step by step
Order matters because each adjustment changes the starting point of the next one. Change it and you end up redoing work.
1. White balance
This solves most of the problem. With the eyedropper, look for something that was actually grey or white: light sand, a rock, a mask skirt, a tank. Avoid the background water, which is not neutral, and avoid anything with a colour of its own.
If there is no neutral point at all, start with the automatic correction and fine-tune afterwards with temperature and tint.
2. Exposure
Now that the colour is right, adjust overall brightness. With sun or surface in the frame, watch for areas of pure white: there is no recoverable information left there.
3. Contrast and blacks
Suspended particles scatter light and leave a kind of veil. Raising contrast and lowering the blacks slightly restores the sense of depth. Do not crush them completely: leaving them a notch above zero gives a less harsh finish.
4. Local adjustments, if needed
This is where an edit goes from correct to good. Separating subject and background lets you lift the subject without warming the water, which is the central conflict of almost any underwater photo. Not every photo needs it, but the difficult ones do.
5. Saturation
At the end, never at the start. Saturating before correcting amplifies exactly the blue cast you are trying to remove. If you can, use vibrance rather than saturation: it affects muted colours more and already vivid ones less.
6. Sharpening, only where it belongs
On the subject, not the water. Sharpening the blue background makes noise and particles visible, which is exactly what you do not want to show.

Knowing when to stop is hard because the eye adapts. After twenty minutes with a photo, excess saturation starts to look normal. Three tricks that work:
- Compare with the original every few minutes. Not to go back, but to recalibrate your eye. If seeing the original makes you think «this was not that bad either», you have gone too far.
- Step back from the screen or look at the thumbnail. Excesses of colour and contrast show up far sooner at small size than at 100 %.
- Let it rest. If the photo matters, save it and come back the next day. It is the most honest filter there is.
Warning sign: if you needed more than three or four strong adjustments to make the photo work, the problem probably is not the editing. Photos taken from far away, with heavy backscatter or with the subject in deep shade have a ceiling, and forcing them only produces noise and false colour. A modest version beats a broken image.
The mistakes that give away a bad edit

Final checklist before publishing
- The whites on the gear are still white, with no pink or green tint
- Divers' skin has a believable tone
- The water still looks like water: blue or green, not violet or grey
- There are no detail-free pure white areas in the sun or on pale bellies
- The blacks hold some information; they are not flat absolute black
- Sharpening is on the subject, not the background
- Seen as a thumbnail, the photo reads well and does not look excessive
- You still have the untouched original file

How do you correctly edit a diving photo?

How much should you correct an underwater photo?
It depends on depth, distance to the subject and whether a strobe was used. A photo at 5 metres with a strobe needs little; one at 25 metres in ambient light needs strong red recovery. Applying the same to both ruins one.
How do I know if I have overdone it?
Violet water, pink skin, orange sand and whites that stop being white. If the blue of the water has stopped looking like water, the correction has gone too far.
Should macro and wide angle be edited the same way?
No. In macro the colour is already there and the work is microcontrast and sharpening. In wide angle most of the image is water column, so what matters is the balance between the background blue and the subject.
Can you edit well without Lightroom?
Yes. Lightroom gives more control over 12 and 14-bit RAW, but for publishing on social media or a blog a dedicated editor handles the base correction in one click with equivalent results.
